Is teeth whitening safe?

Teeth whitening is becoming very popular over recent years as more people are longing for a brighter, whiter smile. However, teeth and gums are being put at risk from unprofessional and ‘Do-It-Yourself’ whitening treatments.

There are more teeth whitening options available than ever before. Whether you are using an over-the-counter method, toothpaste or mouthwash or trying whitening pens, strips and trays, you could potentially be putting your teeth and gums in a very harmful situation.

What is the law surrounding teeth whitening?

Professional dentists, who are registered with the General Dental Council (GDC) are the only people that are legally allowed to carry out a teeth whitening treatment.

To whiten your teeth, hydrogen peroxide is used. As with any chemical, it should be used in a certain way and at a certain level to prevent any harm from being done to your teeth or gums. The legal amount of hydrogen peroxide in products for use by the public is 0.1% and 6% for dentists and other registered practitioners.

Home whitening kits have been found to contain up to 300 times the legal limit of hydrogen peroxide which can have catastrophic effects on your teeth and gums.

What damage can be caused by illegal teeth whitening?

When you undergo illegal treatment without a professional to oversee the process, you are putting your teeth and gums at risk of many negative effects. Using high levels of the whitening chemical can cause blistering to your gums and irreversible effects to the enamel on your teeth. As well as this, your teeth can become extremely sensitive and soft tissues of the mouth can become irritated and burnt.

Why should you use professional teeth whitening treatment?

As with any medical treatment, it is best to have teeth whitening treatment carried out by a qualified professional. Having your teeth whitened at a dental practice is the safest, and often the most effective way of achieving a sparkling smile.

Before you undergo treatment, your dentist will assess your current oral health to make sure you are suitable for whitening. This is to make sure you won’t suffer from any unnecessary side effects.
