At Oak Mount Dental Practice, our team will do everything they can to help ensure your gums are in, and stay in the best possible condition.
Gum disease is developed over a period of time, from the build-up of plaque on the teeth. This plaque contains bacteria that can make your gums sore, puffy and infected.
There are two different types of gum disease; gingivitis and periodontitis. Gingivitis is a mild form of gum disease and if detected early enough, is often reversible. If gingivitis is left untreated or detected too late, the disease will worsen into periodontitis which is a permanent and serious condition.
Gingivitis can be cured by having regular dental treatment and developing a good oral hygiene routine. We will thoroughly clean and remove any tartar from your teeth and provide you with advice on reducing the progression of gum disease.
If you are diagnosed with periodontitis, unfortunately no treatment will reverse the condition but by having regular hygienist appointments and following a strict hygiene routine, the progression of the disease can be slowed down.
Severe gum disease, or periodontitis, can affect your oral health in many ways. The biggest way is that it can result in you losing teeth. It can also have negative effects on your overall health. Links have been made between gum disease and people who suffer with heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease, lung infections and cardiovascular disease.
