What does a dental hygienist do?

Dental hygienists play a very important part of your dental health care. In this article, we will discuss what a dental hygienist does, and why it’s crucial for your oral health that you book regular appointments with them.

What is the role of a dental hygienist?

The role of a dental hygienist is to primarily make sure your oral health is in top condition. They have expert knowledge on how to keep your oral hygiene to an excellent standard. During an appointment, your hygienist will offer you valuable advice on keeping your teeth and gums in a healthy and clean condition at home. As well as this, they will thoroughly clean your mouth – removing plaque, tartar and other debris that has built up around the teeth and gums. This cleaning process is known as a ‘scale and polish’.

How often should you have an appointment with a hygienist?

Everyone knows that they should be visiting the dentist on a regular basis, but sadly this isn’t the case with the dental hygienist. We recommend that our patients book an appointment with our hygienist at least every six months. In fact, most of our patients have a hygienist appointment directly after their dental check-up with the dentist.

Why is professional cleaning important?

Having your teeth cleaned by a hygienist makes sure the hard to reach areas of your mouth are getting cleaned. Even with the best oral hygiene routine, you will never be able to clean all of the areas of your teeth without a professional.

Making sure your teeth and gums are as clean as possible means that you are reducing your risk of developing tooth decay and gum disease. Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss, and can also lead to bleeding and swollen gums, receding gums and bad breath.
