With everything that’s been happening over the last year, the thought of a well-earned holiday later in the year is forefront in many peoples minds. Sun, sea, and selfies are sure to be the order of the day – unless you are suffering from missing teeth, and then the latter is something you’ll want to avoid at all costs. But what if you could have a perfect smile by the time you get to go on holiday? Read on to discover how.
Are you missing out because of missing teeth?
If you are suffering from missing teeth, the chances are that you have been missing out as a result. For some people, this means skipping holiday selfies and family photoshoots, while for others it may mean sacrificing career opportunities due to a lack of self-esteem. It can even cause people to skip social occasions, which can take a real toll on your wellbeing.
The truth is, you are far from alone – almost three-quarters of British adults have lost at least one tooth. But when you see a gap in the mirror every day, it can really make you feel like you are the odd one out and this can gradually wear away at your confidence. Well, the good news is, it doesn’t have to stay that way – with dental implants, you could be smiling again by summer.
What are dental implants?
Dental implants are a long-term, reliable solution that is ideal for replacing anything from a single missing tooth to several teeth or even an entire arch. They look and feel natural and provide long-lasting comfort and confidence. So just how do dental implants actually work?
How do dental implants work?
Dental implants work by replacing the root of the missing tooth or teeth with a special titanium rod that helps to restore strength in the jaw and provides a firm foundation for replacement teeth to be mounted. Titanium is chosen as this material is able to fuse with the bone. Once the new root has settled in, an abutment is installed and realistic-looking crowns can then be fitted. Because dental implants replace the missing root, they do not rely on other teeth for support as is the case with bridges and crowns. An advantage of this is that they are suitable for most patients regardless of why the tooth or teeth are missing and do not cause damage to otherwise healthy teeth.
Is dental implant treatment painful?
If you are considering dental implants or any other form of cosmetic dentistry, it is natural that you may be concerned about this. The good news is that dental implant treatment is carried out under anaesthetic meaning the treatment itself is painless. Once the implant is in place, you should be able to eat and drink normally within a matter of 24-48 hours. As with any dental treatment, you may experience a small amount of discomfort during healing, but we will make sure that you have everything you need to keep this minimal.
How long does it take?
Placing the implant itself usually takes around 1-2 hours. You will then need to allow time for something called ‘osseointegration’ to take place. This is where the root fully bonds with the bone. For most people, this will take 4-6 weeks, although in some cases it may need up to 12 weeks. Once the implant is fully bonded, you will be able to have your abutment and crown fitted. With this in mind, now is a great time to speak to your dentist about implants if you’d like to have a sparkling new smile in time for summer.
